Cognitive load theory (CLT) aims to explain how the information processing load induced by learning tasks can affect students’ ability to process new information and to construct knowledge in long-term memory. Its basic premise is that human cognitive processing is heavily constrained by our limited working memory which can only process a limited number of information elements at a time. Learn more
The International Cognitive Load Theory Association (ICLTA) is a global network of researchers, educators, and practitioners committed to advancing instructional design based on cognitive load theory. Founded in 2014, ICLTA aims to encourage research in this area; facilitate the dissemination of research findings to individuals and organizations for whom instructional design is relevant; and assist communication between people worldwide who use cognitive load theory in their work.
